About
My name is Carole Gilmore, MJI
I became a Mah Jongg Instructor (MJI) because, while I enjoyed the spaces I was in, I noticed there weren't many other faces that looked like mine in those spaces. When I started talking to friends and acquaintances, I realized I wasn't alone—many of them wanted to learn but didn't feel comfortable or confident stepping into spaces where inclusivity wasn't a priority. So I made a decision: I'd venture into those spaces myself, learn the game, and bring that knowledge back to my community. My goal was to create something different—a safe and welcoming environment where we could embrace diversity in thinking, socialization, and learning together.
Everyone is welcome at our table. We don't discriminate, and we want everyone to feel comfortable. However, we unapologetically cultivate, support, and celebrate diverse spaces.

SHARED MOMENTS, SHARED TILES
At Melanated Mah Jongg, we teach American Mah Jongg in a space intentionally created to welcome and encourage Black women and women of color. The name "Mah Jongg" means sparrows—birds that remind us of the beauty in community and the joy of shared moments. It's this spirit of togetherness that we bring to every game. Our Maj Jongg Instructor (MJI) ensures everyone feels comfortable learning.
